That season the Cougars partecipated in the NAIA National Tournament and were ranked in the Top 25 of the NAIA National Poll. 2001-2002-it proved to be a breakout season for Hampton. He received an Honorable Mention - NAIA All-American selection and was recognized as the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the year Runner-up. Hampton, was also an All-CCAC selection and repeated his performance as the SXU Defensive player of the Year.
